Writing Awards

2002 Associated Press Sports Editors. Earned fifth place nationally in Enterprise Reporting for contribution to package on knee injuries in female athletes. Story followed a high school sophomore into the surgery room for her second ACL operation in a year.

2002 Georgia Associated Press. Package on knee injuries in female athletes won first place in Sports Writing and was also named Story of the Year for Class AA. Click here for my contribution.

2002 Gannett. Won first place in Sports/Outdoors Writing in world’s largest newspaper chain’s quarterly Well Done contest. Recognized were "a selection of Dan Washburn’s engaging columns. He took readers under the muddy waters of the Mississippi to experience the sport of ‘handgrabbing’ huge catfish and around the ice of a hockey rink on the movable throne of the common man: the Zamboni."

2001 Georgia Sports Writers Association. Named state’s best sports columnist for newspapers with circulations of 30,000 or less. Also, won first place in Outdoors Writing for fourth straight year. Took first place in Amateur, Non-Scholastic Writing for third year in a row. Won second place in Outdoors Writing, as well.

2001 Georgia Associated Press. Won first place in Sports Writing for a story that chronicled a day in the life of a high school football coach, and third place in Feature Writing for a firsthand look at working a 24-hour shift with firefighters and emergency medical technicians. Also, won second place in Non-Deadline Reporting for contribution to newsroom’s "The Cost of Smoking" project.

2001 Georgia Press Association. Won first place in Sports Writing for a collection of work and third place in Feature Writing for a collection of work.

2000 Associated Press Sports Editors. For the second year in a row, named a top-10 finalist for Enterprise Reporting in the APSE’s prestigious annual national writing contest. This year, a 1A Sunday package in The Times investigating the growing dispute over recreational access to North Georgia’s public and private lands was honored.

2000 Georgia Sports Writers Association. Won eight awards — more than any other writer in the state — in the GSWA’s annual writing contest. Took first place in Outdoors Writing for third year in a row. Also earned top prize in Olympic Story, College Feature Story and Amateur, Non-Scholastic Writing, a category that I swept. Won second place in Column Writing and third in High School Deadline Reporting, as well.

2000 Georgia Associated Press. Won first place in Non-Deadline Reporting for the outdoors access package, second place in Sports Writing for a feature story about the unique relationship between the Lake Lanier Rowing Club and a local alternative school for troubled youths, and second place in Deadline Reporting for news coverage of "Ice Storm 2000."

1999 Associated Press Sports Editors. A 1A Sunday package in The Times highlighting Gainesville’s largely-Latino adult soccer league was named a top-10 finalist for Enterprise Reporting in the APSE’s annual national writing contest.

1999 Georgia Sports Writers Association. Won six writing awards — including Best Overall Story for a Sporting Life column on ice climbing — in the GSWA’s annual contest. Three Sporting Life entries swept the Outdoors Writing category, and a Sporting Life piece on rabbit hunting was named Best Column. The in-depth package on a Latino soccer league won first-place in Amateur, Non-Scholastic Writing.

1999 Georgia Associated Press. A Sunday package on adult behavior — often misbehavior — at youth sports events won Second Place in Sports Writing in the Georgia AP’s annual writing contest.

1998 Gannett. A selection of Sporting Life columns was honored in the 22nd annual Best of Gannett contest, which recognizes exceptional work by journalists at Gannett News Service and all daily Gannett newspapers across the United States. Sporting Life won Third Place in Sports.

1998 Georgia Sports Writers Association. A Sporting Life column on rowing earned First Place in Outdoors Writing in the annual GSWA writing contest.

1996 Sigma Tau Delta. The essay “A Gray Matter: Jean Toomer and the Issue of Black and White” was awarded the 1995-96 Frederic Fadner Award for top critical essay by "The Rectangle: Journal of Sigma Tau Delta, The International English Honor Society."
